Rimini (2 September 2021) – Macfrut 2022 will host the International Cherry Symposium. The internationally renowned event will be previewed on Wednesday 8 September at 12:15 p.m. during the 38th edition of Macfrut, to be held next week at the Rimini Expo Centre (7-9 September). The presentation will be attended by Alessio Mammi, Councillor for Agriculture of the Emilia-Romagna region, Renzo Piraccini, President of Macfrut, Stefano Lugli from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Brunella Morandi from the University of Bologna, and Davide Neri from the Marche Polytechnic University.
The International Cherry Symposium will take place from 2 to 6 May next year and is sure to attract producers and experts from all over the world. It will be previewed during this edition of Macfrut at a conference entitled ‘New frontiers in the protected cultivation of fruit’, with a special focus on cherry trees (on Tuesday 7 September at 3:00 p.m.).
As for the International Cherry Symposium, the event will consist of several separate events: a two-day advanced training session held at the University Residential Centre of Bertinoro (2-3 May); a global symposium on key issues relating to the cherry tree (global market, sustainability, varietal innovation and covering systems), which will take place at Macfrut (4 May); an event focusing on market trends with top players in the sector (5 May), as well as guided visits to leading companies in the sector who will be attending Macfrut (5 May); and, to conclude, a tour of the main cherry tree growers to get a closer look at product innovations (6 May).
Cherry trees will therefore be in the spotlight throughout the symposium. Stefano Lugli, from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, who is the technical coordinator of the initiative along with Brunella Morandi and Davide Neri, explains: ‘We are extremely pleased to announce that the International Cherry Symposium will take place during the next edition of Macfrut. Considering how important this event is, we would like to invite you to attend the presentation that will be held at the upcoming edition of Macfrut, scheduled for Wednesday 8 September 2021. Cherries are widely cultivated all over the world, so much so that they can be found anywhere from Norway to Australia, from Japan to Canada. Today, fresh produce is available globally nearly all year round. The latest available data show that six countries lead the ranking of the largest cherry producers: Turkey ranks first, followed by the USA. Two emerging countries, Chile and Uzbekistan, rank third and fourth, both showing remarkable growth in terms of yields and areas cultivated with cherry trees. In Europe, Spain and Italy are in the lead, with stable yields and cultivation areas and produce of the highest quality. At Macfrut 2022, key players in the industry will discuss the future prospects and market trends for cherries during a focus session dedicated to the world’s leading cherry producers.’
